CARA's Little Star

Jake

Submitted by: Joni Leviner

Story: Jake was my first Cocker Spaniel. He was found in the streets of a nearby town apparently lost due to Hurricane Hugo in 1989. A friend of the family picked him up and made all attempts to locate his owner. After losing patience with him in her small apartment, she asked if we could keep him because we had more room and a fenced in yard for exercise. Needless to say, he had now found his forever home.

At first, he did not like anyone who had blonde or gray hair. The Vet indicated that he had most likely been abused by someone with light colored hair. I don't think that Jake had ever had any toys before he came to us, so he was like a kid at Christmas when he recieved a new one, however he had one favorite. He recieved a squeaky toy one year from his aunt Robin. From that day forward until the day he died, that toy never left his side.

Unfortunately, when we got Jake he was Heartworm positive. He eventually passed away due to complications from the heartworm treatment. It was more than he could bear.Watching him lose the battle was the hardest thing I have ever been through with a pet.

After much consideration it only seemed appropriate that he be laid to rest with his favorite toy by his side.

Jake is the reason for my love of the Cocker Spaniel, I know that one day when we meet again, he will come running with that faded, cracked, beloved toy in his mouth.

Love, Mommy, Luke and Reese
